Description
For this job, we are looking for a critical minerals exploration dashboard. Submissions will contain a Jupyter notebook file with the dashboard written in Python, and GeoJSON or GeoTIFF files containing the geospatial data.
All submissions for this bounty will be shared with the entire ThinkOnward Community, promoting data exploration and new insights to better understand emerging horizons.
In collaboration with Getech
For this bounty ThinkOnward is collaborating with Getech, a market leading provider of potential fields data and exploration tools. Getech helps to unlock the Earth’s subsurface potential, locating the essential energy and mineral resources needed for the world to decarbonise.
Data Criteria:
Data is downloadable from the open internet.
Data must have a clear open-source license for commercial use (i.e., Apache 2.0, MIT, BSD, CC-BY)
Google Maps and/or Esri ArcGIS Online can be used as a supplementary data source, but at least one additional credible source is required (i.e. the USGS)
Data is commonly found as shapefiles, rasters, or geodatabase, but these must be converted to GeoJSON format.
GeoJSON CRS is EPSG:4326 - WGS 84
A minimum submission of 1 functioning dashboard that includes a map component, 1 dataset that includes data about critical minerals
Expected Output
Zip file containing: GeoJSON or GeoTIFF files, Jupyter notebook file written in Python and any Python scripts used to download data (if applicable)
GeoJSON file:
Points, lines, or polygons with relevant critical mineral data
GeoTIFF file:
Raster data for regularly gridded data
Python Scripts/Jupyter Notebook Requirements:
Must be written in Python
It can be run on a cloud virtual machine (Ex. AWS)
Script comments, doc strings, or markdown describing the steps involved.
A clear description of all parameters (username, dates, etc.).
A clear description of the setup and how to run the script.
Dashboard that displays data from the GeoJSON and GeoTIFF files along with analysis of your choice
Evaluation
A minimum submission should include:
A dataset featuring data on the presence of critical minerals and geospatial features with the following types (inclusive but not limited to):
General: Names of entities/units
Targets layer: Presence or absence of critical mineral (CM) deposits/occurrences
Geospatial coverage
Geology, including rock types and ages (geochronology)
Gravity features and anomalies
Magnetic features and anomalies
Geochemical features
Additional features that could reasonably be included are locations of active mines or historical mining activity, etc.
A dashboard with at least one map component and several supportive plots showing the influence of features on the presence of CM deposits
A description of the used sources
A story or textual interpretation of the created dataset and dashboard
The selection of the top 20 submissions (from those which faced the above criteria) will be evaluated by three judges on informal characteristics, such as:
Clarity and logic of story
Quality and interpretability of the dashboard
Bonus points will be awarded for:
Meaningful data engineering
Integration of interdisciplinary data that enrich the dataset
The judges’ averaged scores will determine the final list of winners.
Honorable mentions will also be selected in three categories and awarded additional prizes:
The most comprehensive and recent set of layers
The most well-supported interpretation
The most innovative data product
Prize
Prizes for this job are as follows:
$2,100 for the best data story
$2,000 for the best dashboard
Three $300 honorable mentions
