ThinkOnward is seeking a senior geohazards and shallow seismic interpretation expert to build a baseline regional framework for offshore Angola. The project will integrate regional seismic interpretation, depositional systems characterization, published research, and available well information into a coherent geohazards-focused framework.
Primary objective: Create a regional stratigraphic framework interpretation in Petrel, focused on overburden above salt, and characterize types and distribution of the principal shallow geohazards within the framework.
Conduct an initial data readiness and suitability review of the available Angola seismic and well data package before interpretation begins. The review should confirm data coverage, quality, coordinate/reference consistency, lineage, and suitability for regional shallow geohazards interpretation, as well as identify critical gaps and priority 2D/3D datasets to use for the regional framework.
Build a coherent regional stratigraphic interpretation framework across the broader deepwater Angola area, with initial focus on priority blocks or areas.
Define depositional environment and expected geohazard themes by stratigraphic unit and mapped area.
Integrate seismic observations with published research, IODP cores, industry knowledge, and available well information.
Document interpretation rationale, assumptions, uncertainties, and confidence levels.
Develop deliverables that can be directly adopted and extended by the geohazards specialist team for detailed 3D seismic interpretation during future detailed geohazards assessments.
Desired Deliverables:
Petrel project containing the regional post-salt stratigraphic framework and geohazards characterization
Characterization of depositional environment and principal geohazards organized by unit and mapped area
Technical summary report and presentation deck.
Interpretation handover package with documented workflows, assumptions, and metadata.
Recommendations for future data acquisition, interpretation, or workflow improvements.
up to 8 weeks, full-time, starting end of September 2026.
Locally competitive remuneration.
15+ years of industry experience, senior-level experience in geohazards assessment, shallow-section seismic interpretation, or closely related regional geology.
Offshore Angola or comparable basin experience in geohazards, shallow-section interpretation, regional geology, well delivery. Comparable basin experience includes: deepwater Atlantic margins and/or salt-basins with analogous depositional systems and geohazard themes (e.g., West Africa, Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico).
Demonstrated delivery of basin-scale or regional seismic interpretation frameworks that support exploration, appraisal, opportunity screening, or well / drilling decisions.
Strong expertise in deepwater depositional systems, sedimentology, seismic stratigraphy, shallow geohazard identification, salt settings, and well-seismic correlation.
Advanced proficiency in Petrel. The project environment will use Petrel 2024.
Ability to interpret and connect regional 2D datasets, use 3D data as calibration and infill, and make pragmatic technical decisions when legacy data are incomplete or variable in quality.
Ability to clearly communicate technical interpretations and transfer knowledge to multidisciplinary teams.
Ability to work independently in a remote, structured delivery model and accommodate scheduled engagements during US Central time business hours when required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting growth, new-basin entry, frontier exploration, early opportunity screening, or data-acquisition decisions.
Familiarity with AI-assisted interpretation, document or well-report review, geoscience digitalization, or Petrel-based workflow development is a plus.
Experience teaching, mentoring, or creating reusable best-practice interpretation examples for multidisciplinary geoscience teams is also appreciated.
